Pastor Cindy’s January 8th Epistle

Pastor Cindy’s January 8th Epistle

Dear Friends:

Do you remember your baptism?  I do. I remember the person who did it and what an influence and connection we would have later in both our lives.  More on that this Sunday.  We will be celebrating and remembering our baptisms this Sunday as we read about Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River.

Be sure to have a dish of water out for you and your family for worship. I would invite you to take some time prior to the start of worship or after worship to talk about your baptism with your spouse and/or children and talk with them about their baptisms.  What do you remember?  Do you have pictures or videos? Get them out and re-look at them. If you haven’t been baptized, this might something you want to think about doing once we come back for in-person worship.  One of the many things that we found in going through my Mom/Dad’s house was finding their Baptismal certificates and membership certificates.  But those certificates are only as good as the effort we put into growing in our Christian faith. I am going to move us into a concerted effort of growing in our Christian journeys both individually and corporately.  Everything we do will involve our growing in our Christian faith whether personally or as a church.

My plan for a trip to Israel is just one part of the plan. Some of you are aware that I have been considering making another pilgrimage to Israel. This will be my third trip. I have been talking about this trip since I returned from my last trip in 2013. The difference in this trip is that I want to spend more time in Tiberius to study and have time for discussion about the call to discipleship and meaning of discipleship. Jesus spent seventy-five percent of his public ministry in the Galilean region.   I am planning what I am calling a Backwards Orientation trip. We will begin in Jerusalem with travel to Bethlehem. Around Day 5 we will travel to Tiberius taking in the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, Nazareth and a few other places.  I am working with Educational Opportunities {EO} to organize this trip. The UMC and especially our Indiana Area has worked exclusively with EO over the years in taking people to Israel. If you are worried about safety, EO does a great job of keeping us safe and out of harm’s way. Don’t let that be a reason for not joining us for this trip. Departure time would be early January 2022.  Please email me to express your interest in joining me for this trip.  It will help me establish numbers as I make plans and details with EO.  This will be the trip of a lifetime if you have never been on such a trip.  It will make your study of the bible and the understanding of Jesus ministry come alive for you.  I look forward to traveling with you.

Another part of the plan is our participation in the Real Discipleship Survey. If you have taken the survey, you will be receiving your results from the survey in the mail.  I have organized our own Edwardsville UMC Discipleship Pathway that will help us both individually and corporately to take our next steps in growing in our relationship with Christ. I have enclosed a copy of the Discipleship Pathway for you to get acquainted with.  Be watching for more details.

In our January newsletter, I gave you a Reading plan for studying/reading the Bible beginning in 2021.  This is another way that you can make steps in your personal journey with Christ and learning about the Bible. Please do not make this a burden on yourself.  Read what you can each day.  If you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up about it.  Make the plan work for you.  If it takes you longer than a year, don’t worry.  The plan is meant as a guide not a rule book or a noose around your neck.  Happy reading and growing in your knowledge of God and yourself.

I hope that 2021 will be a much better year for each one of you.  I look forward to the day when we will all be back in worship, singing, seeing one another face to face.  Have a great weekend and may God bless each of you.

Grace and Peace

Pastor Cindy

EUMC CHURCH PICTORIAL DIRECTORY: We have begun getting our Church Directory work finished and will have the book in your hands by February/March 2021.  One of the ways that you can help us is by getting your submitted photos to us. If you had your picture taken on either October 26, 27, 28, 2020, the following information does not apply to you.  Many of you chose to submit a photo rather than have a new picture taken and I understood your reasoning.  For some of you, the photography dates/times were not convenient for you and I could not locate an alternative photography site. We will need to get your signature to release your submitted photo from the Lifetouch Directory staff who completed your previous directory.  Your earlier photos have copyright restrictions on reprinting and submitting without your signature.  If you are submitting a photo please follow these next steps.
1. Please complete the enclosed copy of the Submitted Photo Form. {front and back} marked by the X’s.
2. Return form and picture to the office as soon as possible.  I cannot return the Directory Draft Book until I have your submitted photos.
3. To submit photos, there is a charge of $15.00 which is required from the directory company.  Please submit that when you send your form and photo to the office.
4. The deadline for Submitted photo returns will be Friday, January 22, 2021
.  I have to send the Draft Book Copy before I can approve the Proof Book Copy that will make way for the final printed copies.  Please be patient.  I hope that we will have the book to you by late February or early March.
