Pastor’s May 17th Epistle

Pastor’s May 17th Epistle

In today’s world there are 1001 things to do at about any given moment.  With all of the community opportunities and arts, all of the things on your computer, and all of the channels and shows on demand you can be entertained and distracted at least 24 hours a day.  But church is not intended to be an entertainment or a distraction.

The church is the Bride of Christ.

John 17:20-26 New International Version (NIV)

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one,Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am,and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you[a] known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

We are loved by God and called to come and worship, love and serve our creator and savior.

The church is the body of Christ.

Romans 12:3-8 New International Version (NIV)

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a]faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Through Christ we are one family, one people.  When we serve each other, when we share the Good News we minister and serve with Jesus.

A place For Growth.

Romans 1:12 New International Version (NIV)

12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.

Ephesians 4:29 New International Version (NIV)

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

As we gather to worship God, we do so as a community of fallen people, to heal, forgive and lift each other up in growing and serving God.  Together we make a difference.

Finally, it may sound corny, but I do see the church as a Hospital for sinners, not a Hotel for Saints.

So, when someone asks you why go to church?  Tell them is it the place to be loved into healing by those being healed in the name of the living God.

In Service,

Dave Powell, among the healing.
