03 Aug Why did you do that?
I remember one time when as a kid, I had done something that got me in trouble and mom asking, “why did you do that!?” My reply was the profound, “I don’t know….” Why do we do the things that separate us from God and from each other? Why do we do the very things that hurt us and those we love?
Can we blame Satan, the Tempter? It reads in 2 Corinthians 11:3 (RSV) 3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
Just as Jesus was tempted in the wilderness; you and I can be tempted to do, say, and be the very things that we know will lead us away from God and from those we love. It is more often than not, that we don’t even know why we did what we did, that caused the hurt.
But there is hope, in fact a promise.
1 Corinthians 10:13 (RSV)
13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
If we can keep our mind and heart upon Jesus, if we can have grace and forgiveness for each other and ourselves, then we shall find a renewed relationship and joy with God and those in our lives. So, let us forgive as we desire to be forgiven and love as God loves us as we continue to resist the tempter and walk with our Lord.
